Our Kouga crew going the extra mile!

A tourist from Belgium recently injured herself while surfing at one of the world famous Jeffreys Bay surf spots. This injury unfortunately meant that catching her flight out the country was proving to be difficult.

Our team transported her by Ambulance to the Chief Dawid Stuurman Airport in Gqeberha, further assisting her with the check in process.

We are privileged to work alongside amazing armed response companies in the Kariega area. Pictured below is Andre from Multi Security and Sipho, a medic at our Kariega branch. Armed response officers are often the first roleplayers on scene at an emergency and can provide life saving first aid to a patient in need of medical assistance.

Miriam from Algoa Toyota in Gqeberha ensured that our latest purchases went smoothly and these vehicles will go on to save many lives for years to come.

Over the weekend our Kouga branch received a call for a paediatric patient that needed to be transferred to a medical facility in Cape Town. Our team quickly mobilised and soon the little boy and his family were on their way to the Western Cape.

While taking a quick break for the family to stretch their legs in George, an ER24 crew stopped to greet our crews. One of the paramedics from ER24, Leslie-Anne, runs a community knitting project called Comfort Critters and happened to have a soft toy with her. The rest of the journey continued smoothly and their little patient had a bit of extra comfort along the way.

Our team arrived safely in the Cape and their patient was handed over to doctors who continued to provide compassionate care. Well done to our amazing team, Alex Labuschagne and Ruzain Maziena! It is always encouraging to see healthcare workers across the country working together to ensure their patients receive the best care possible. Early this morning our team received a call for a single vehicle that left the road and overturned on Cape Road, Rowallan Park in Gqeberha. Our medics responded and worked alongside the NMBM Fire Department to extricate the driver safely. He was then transported to hospital in a stable condition.

Yesterday was the annual Toy Run, a charity event held across South Africa where motorcyclists gather for a mass convoy across town, donating toys for children in need at the end of the event. It is with great sadness that we share the news that our beloved Vee (Sindiswa Virginia Baka) passed away suddenly in hospital. She was part of the Gardmed family for 20 years and will be remembered with much love and respect. Sivakalelwa kabuhlungu ngoku shiywa kwethu ngu Sindiswa Baka ngalentsasa.

My name is Aatifah Ackerdien and I am a call taker

My name is Aatifah Ackerdien and I am a call taker and dispatcher at the Gardmed Ambulance Service control room.

I grew up in Port Elizabeth and the ocean has such good memories for me. My dad was a lifeguard at Shark Rock beach and even though I was little I still remember being at the beach with him and my mom when he was on duty.

I grew up in an English speaking home, at times the Arabic language would be spoken as well (obviously just the basic). Sunday lunch was always my favorite, my mom loves the kitchen - typical lunch would be Chicken curry, Roti, Hong Kong chicken, oven potatoes, Mac and cheese and veggies (I was really just there for the chicken curry)

I always wanted to be a nurse growing up, during my childhood I was always caring for the elderly, or just people in general. I spent alot of time in hospital as a child, that has led me to wanting to help people. All my dolls always had Asthma during play time!

Growing older I realised how important my heritage is and wanted to learn more I then went to a Arabic girls college and studied the history and Arabic language, I can read, write and understand Arabic which might be beneficial to me in the future when I decide to travel.

SANCCOB plays an incredibly important role looking after sea birds and the 5km annual fun run helps raise funds for their facility.

My name is Grant Schipper and I was born in Cape Town, later moving to PE in 1993 when I was 2 years old. I grew up in the western suburbs and I have lots of fond memories of riding my bicycle all day long in the streets as a child.

Our typical Sunday was to go for an afternoon drive around the coast and my parents bribed us kids to join with the promise of an ice cream along the way. We would end off the weekend with a traditional family braai and to this day my dad always braais on a Sunday nights.

I grew up in an English household and I was 100% English until I met my girlfriend(now wife) in grade 11 and quickly had to learn Afrikaans in order to blend with her family! Now Afrikaans music is my go to on my Spotify playlists.

My name is Sikho Makeleni, I was born in the forme

My name is Sikho Makeleni, I was born in the former Transkei in Nqamakwe Village in an area called Mantunzeleni AA under the ruling of King Tyekana. I am from the clan Ntsele Bhukula Nkawali Didiba. We were an isiXhosa speaking household of 8 siblings and we would go to the field and herd our father’s cattle and sheep.

In our spare time we enjoyed playing with sticks and playing indigenous games. Meals at home would often be samp and red meat because of my father doing small scale farming.
Sometimes we would also enjoy Umvubo (African salad) especially when we came back from the bushes looking after the livestock.

Helping people in need is something I love to do and putting others first is important.

Sikho is a basic life support medic at the Gqeberha Gardmed Ambulance Service branch. Every year around Heritage Day we ask three staff members to tell us about their heritage. We look forward to sharing the others!
