Yesterday was the annual Toy Run, a charity event

Yesterday was the annual Toy Run, a charity event held across South Africa where motorcyclists gather for a mass convoy across town, donating toys for children in need at the end of the event. Our team was privileged to assist with both medical support as well as working alongside the traffic department and marshals to ensure road closures went smoothly.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our beloved Vee (Sindiswa Virginia Baka) passed away suddenly in hospital. She was part of the Gardmed family for 20 years and will be remembered with much love and respect. Sivakalelwa kabuhlungu ngoku shiywa kwethu ngu Sindiswa Baka ngalentsasa.

My name is Aatifah Ackerdien and I am a call taker

My name is Aatifah Ackerdien and I am a call taker and dispatcher at the Gardmed Ambulance Service control room.

I grew up in Port Elizabeth and the ocean has such good memories for me. My dad was a lifeguard at Shark Rock beach and even though I was little I still remember being at the beach with him and my mom when he was on duty.

I grew up in an English speaking home, at times the Arabic language would be spoken as well (obviously just the basic). Sunday lunch was always my favorite, my mom loves the kitchen - typical lunch would be Chicken curry, Roti, Hong Kong chicken, oven potatoes, Mac and cheese and veggies (I was really just there for the chicken curry)

I always wanted to be a nurse growing up, during my childhood I was always caring for the elderly, or just people in general. I spent alot of time in hospital as a child, that has led me to wanting to help people. All my dolls always had Asthma during play time!

Growing older I realised how important my heritage is and wanted to learn more I then went to a Arabic girls college and studied the history and Arabic language, I can read, write and understand Arabic which might be beneficial to me in the future when I decide to travel.

We were proud to sponsor the 5km fun run “waddle” held by SANCCOB at Cape Recife over the weekend. A few of our enthusiastic staff members also took part in this fun event in a beautiful environment. SANCCOB plays an incredibly important role looking after sea birds and the 5km annual fun run helps raise funds for their facility.
